Contemporary dance is a dance style that has been developed during the mid-twentieth century and has since grown to become one of the most popular genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and Europe. It appears as a revolutionary dance idea in contrast to the strict principals of ballet dance. Pioneers of Contemporary dance are Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, José Limón.
This dance style focuses more emotional and physical expression. There are different contemporary styles such as Cunningham technique, Graham technique, Limón technique, release technique. The students will learn how to use gravity as a very important tool to move around the space, they will be guided to build strength, confidence and strong knowledge of this style. During the lesson basic elements of the contemporary dance technique will be analysed and gradually through improvisation students will be able to understand and fully express their emotions while performing.
